i haven't done a real layout in months.
katie works better than his stuffed animal in most circumstances. she happened to be home from school that day due to a sore throat.

i didn't go to the fairgrounds to watch fireworks with the family this year so my husband took the kids and met up with friends. realizing i had NO pictures of the kids this fourth of july, i made them go out yesterday night with some left over sparklers and light up the night.
i'm patriotic, aren't i?

i'm trying to get more candid shots of my kids. the everyday stuff that i know i'll forget in probably, let's say, 4-6 hours.
here charlie is taking his nap. you wouldn't know from this picture that just two hours before, he was jumping on his bed, yelling, "I NOT TAKE A NAP. MOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM...I NOT WANNA TAKE A NAP."
he yells everything these days. his conversational voice differs from mine and most other humans on this earth.
so i replied back to charlie, "you have to take a nap." which loosely translates to," mommy needs a break. and my ears are bleeding."
we go through this everyday. 95% of the time, he wins and doesn't take a nap, which loosely translates to, "MOM. MOM. MOM. MOM. WATCH THIS MOM. MOM. MOM. YOU DIDN'T WATCH! WATCH THIS TIME, MOM. MOM, FEEL MY MUSCLES, MOM. I A STRONG BOY BUT YOU JUST A GIRL. MOM. MOM. DID YOU SEE THAT?! THAT WAS AWESOME! MOM, WHERE YOU GOING, MOM? CAN I COME WITH YOU? YOU GO PEE PEE OR POO-POO MOM? I COME WITH YOU.. WHY NOT?! MOM. MOM. LET ME IN MOM. IT'S BEEN A SECOND, MOM. YOU DONE? OK, NOW WATCH THIS, MOM..."
and believe it or not, i will miss this just as i miss every phase he's gone through in the past. just the thought of that makes me a little sad...
so here's me trying to document more of the little things.

Hello October. I'm so happy you're finally here. You are, by far, my favorite month out of the year but please don't tell the others. They may get ticked off. They just can't compare to your cooler weather and the changing colors of the leaves. I can reopen the windows and the kids can play outside without being eaten up by bugs or passing out from the heat. No more mowing. No more sweating in places I never thought I could.
But September was a good month as well...

I realized in June that I took no pictures of my kids for the entire month of May. None. NONE. How I let that happen, I don't really know. I think it was all the end of the school craziness that took over my mind and the thought of, Hey Moon, you need to take some pictures of the kids, just never fully settled in the forefront.
So in the hopes of not forgetting this month, I took out the old seamless paper and took a few of the kids.
My oldest:
She'll be nine in 19 days. She's been reading the Harry Potter series all summer and is now on book four (The Goblet of Fire). She'll be starting the fourth grade in 12 more days. Shes' the most like me in a lot of ways. The little blemish looking thing on her left cheek, she's had that for almost a year. A spider bite that never went away and are now doing laser treatments for. She's lucky she has us as parents because had she had my parents, there would be no laser treatments. She'd just have to live with the mark on her face for the rest of her life. LIke I said, she's lucky.
My middle:
She just turned seven. She'll be in the second grade. She's my photogenic child.
She makes me smile. She is hands down the sweetest out of the three I have. And because of that, I worry about her the most. I hope that as she gets older, she's able to stick up for herself and not get pushed around.
And my last:
He's two and a half. He'll be three in a little over three months. I'm not sure what to make of him yet. He recently learned to say 'I love you'. He says it a lot after I catch him doing something naughty (I wuv you, Mom.) and he knows he's going to be punished. You can't really blame the kid for trying.
He's into doing everything by himself. Even though he's been potty trained for several months i still have to wipe his butt.
I tell ya, I'll be happy when the butt-wiping phase is over.

Buying your first SLR can be down right scary. It was so scary for me, I wasn't even the one who purchased mine. It was my husband. He surprised me with it on Christmas day, over five years ago. I didn't think I was ready but he saw something in me before I ever did.
Let's face it. An SLR is and investment. In my world anything over $400 is called an "investment". And with this investment, I'd better be willing to either learn how to use it, make money from it or it better be able to wash my clothes or clean my house or get me to McDonalds for a cup of coffee.
So when I opened my Christmas present back in 2004, I knew what Richard had gotten me. A Canon DRebel. The camera that I thought I was secretly researching online. And the best way to describe the feeling when I was ripping through the wrapping paper was similar to when I was moments away from delivering my first child: YAAAAAAAYYYYYY. My baby, my baby. I'm finally going to meet my baby girl mixed in with oh crap. I AM HAVING A BABY.
And how did I chose on the Canon? Easy. I went to other photogs' blogs and found out what they used. Probably not the smartest way to chose a camera but it worked for me. Now would this be the way I would recommend you chose your first SLR? Um. No. I would tell you go try each camera out and see which one suits your needs the best. Local camera shops will let you rent a camera before you purchase and they'll most likely give you an unbiased opinion on each. Having only used Canons, I can't say whether or not Nikons are better or worse. But I can say that I love my Canons and their lenses. I've not had any problems with any of them to date.

Now I'm off to go see Iron Man 2. I loves me some Robert Downey Jr...

I had the opportunity to photograph a wedding a couple of weekends ago. All the days leading up to the wedding, I was checking the weather and it would go from 40% of rain all the way up to 90% of rain. On the day of the actual wedding, it was raining. And not like a sprinkling of rain. It was lot and LOTS of rain. Rain that causes people's houses to flood. Rain that made our basement flood.
Needless to say, I was a bit stressed out over the weather because all of my plans of doing some outdoor shots were, well...shot.
:P
And it was dark and I knew there was a possibility of having to use a flash and I don't like using a flash but I packed it anyway.Luckily, I didn't have to use it...

It's been so long since the last PTW that I'm at a bit of a loss as to where I left off. So I'm just going to jump into this topic, feet first. I thought of this last night as I was trying to fall asleep and willed myself to remember today to write about it.
I've been playing with perspective a little more to find some interesting angles. There's the old standby of shooting from above and having your subject look up at you. Always a good angle. Gets rid of the double chin. Also great because your light source is coming from above so you can get great catchlights too.
But what about shooting from below?
I was sitting on the grass while the middle was hovering above me. I wanted to get a photo of her new smile since she had just lost another tooth.
Or how about from directly above like this one?
Only problem with this is that I almost stepped on my boys while trying to get this shot. Darn you, vertigo.
Or getting down low (how low can you go. how low can you go...) Sorry. That was an old cheer from grade school that I still remember.
A wedding from this past weekend.
Perspective is an ongoing learning process for me. When I look through some of my favorite photographers' blogs, I'm always asking myself where they were in relation to the models in the photo. I guess the best way to get better is to keep trying different things at different angles, which is what I'm going to do right now.
